John joined Bain Capital Ventures in 2009. As Head of the Operating Group, John works with Bain Capital Ventures portfolio companies to address strategic and operational challenges.
Prior to joining Bain Capital Ventures, John was President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of M|C Communications. Prior to M|C, John was President and Chief Executive Officer of Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). During his tenure, ISS doubled in revenues and realized 250% increase in profit over three years. ISS was sold to the The RiskMetrics Group in 2006. Previously, John founded Mainspring Inc., a provider of strategic consulting, research, and advisory services to Fortune 1000 companies. Under his leadership, Mainspring grew from a start up to a publicly traded company and was purchased by IBM in 2001. At IBM, John built a strategy and consulting practice that eventually led to the creation of IBM business consulting where he served as the Global General Manager of the Financial Services Group. Prior to founding Mainspring, John founded Course Technology, which was sold to The Thomson Corporation.
John received his BA from St. Norbert College. John attended the Executive Education Program at INSEAD.
On a personal note, John enjoys tennis, music, travel, and being with family and friends. His favorite quote is “Failure is self-correcting; its success that kills you”, and one of his proudest accomplishments is being responsible for hiring nine people who are current and/or former CEOs.
